Frequently Asked Questions

Steganography is the art of hiding a message within another, non-secret medium. In image steganography, we modify the least significant bits (LSBs) of pixel color values to encode text data. The visual change is so small it's invisible to humans but can be decoded programmatically.
No! Pixel Locker uses LSB (Least Significant Bit) steganography — only the last bit of each color channel is modified. The maximum change per pixel is ±1 in RGB values (out of 255), which is completely imperceptible to the human eye.
The encoded message will likely be destroyed if you re-compress (like converting to JPEG) or resize the image. Always download as PNG and share the original file without further processing. Use platforms like Telegram or email — not Instagram which recompresses images.
Absolutely nothing leaves your device. Pixel Locker is a pure client-side application using HTML5 Canvas. There are no APIs, no analytics, no network requests during encoding/decoding. You can even use it offline after the page loads.
The capacity depends on image dimensions. Each pixel can store 3 bits (one per RGB channel). A 1000×1000 image has 1 million pixels = 3 million bits = ~375,000 characters. The tool shows the exact capacity after you upload an image.
Without a password, anyone with Pixel Locker can decode your message. Adding a password applies an XOR cipher to the message before embedding — even if someone extracts the bytes, they'll see gibberish without the correct password. It's an extra security layer.
